Local is Lekker: Clari Design

About 2 months ago, I came across Clari Design on Twitter – and oh-so-naturally, I checked out the images posted on their Twitter profile and the link in their bio – and I was pleasantly surprised!

april 2014 003

Clari Design specializes in handmade jewellery, T-shirts and breathtakingly beautiful crocheted items. This wonderful brand was created by mother and daughter team, Dolla and Chantel, and was born from their shared passion for creating magnificent, handmade pieces. Dolla is the Crochet Queen of Clari Design and is responsible for all of the stunning crocheted bags, iPad and iPhone pouches from Clari Design. Chantel, on the other hand, is in control of all of the aspects relating to the jewellery and T-shirts made and sold by Clari Design. She is also the mastermind and crafter of the adorable, itsy-bitsy handpainted wooden disks that are embedded in silver rings, which you will find in their store.

Hello there, designers :)

Hello there, designers 🙂

Just some of the wonderful products available from Clari Design

Just some of the wonderful products available from Clari Design

Clari Design had been in the making since 2009, but officially kicked off in 2011 after Chantel’s return from the Netherlands (like, why didn’t you take me with? 😦 ). It was her trip to the land of the Dutch that allowed Chantel to experience and view the world of design and crafts from a different perspective – this is what finally got the ball rolling for Clari DesignClari Design has been doing so well that they  have reached as far as Australia, the Netherlands and even America. Wooohooo, go Clari!

As all of the items promoted and sold by Clari Design are locally made here in South Africa, most of the inspiration for the designs, come from South Africa itself. When I asked Chantel to elaborate, this is what she had to say “We love people and what they are made of, what they love, how and why they love it. It inspires us to make people happy. Beautiful surroundings make people happy, and the most beautiful surrounding is nature – so we bring nature into your home, onto your t-shirts and even on your jewellery. If it’s not with a realistic painting or a silhouette, it will be with colours and textures.”

Do you want to know what I love most about the masterminds behind Clari Design? It’s that they are absolutely accommodating. If you’ve seen something online, perhaps a crocheted handbag or a little pin cushion, and you simply have to have it, these amazing women will make it for you. Yup, seriously! All you have to do is contact Clari Design (which is simple, because Chantel is the sweetest pea around!) and provide them with your specifications and they will custom make it for you. Easy as that!
If you like what you saw and read above, then perhaps check out Clari Design out on Mzansi Store, Hello Pretty and they will soon be making their way onto ShopaGift. And if you are one of the lucky ones that live in the Western Cape then be sure to pay their shop a visit, located in the small town of Piketberg. You can expect items to be priced from as little as R30 to a whopping R1000, so there really is something for everyone! You can also find Clari Designs on Facebook and Twitter too, so remember to like and follow!

Event: Durban Blogger Meet

I was lucky enough to be afforded the fab opportunity of attending Durban’s first ever blogger meet, this past Saturday – and boy, was it uhmaaaazing!

20140408-123417.jpg

So here’s all thee deets:

The Venue:
The meet was held at the fairly new Hashtag Social Restaurant, located at 18 Windermere Road. Hashtag has an uber cool setup and awesome atmosphere. They have these bright yellow chairs and tables that have totally adorable teal stands – it’s so quirky and cute, my kind of style! And they have these oh-so-huge windows that allow all the sunlight to shine through which brightens up the whole room. It’s basically an amazing place to chill out, soak up the sun and have some fun!

Unfortunately, they aren’t Halaal so I couldn’t taste their food, but I did have a cup of coffee, which was surprisingly delish – I’m a tea lover and I almost never drink coffee, so for me to say it was good, then it totally must have been!

So what did you lucky ladies get up to at the meet?
We mingled at first and got to meet and greet our fellow Durban bloggers, munched on some cupcakes, macarons and cake pops and we had some amazing people from great brands address us.

We had Mandy from Kitten Action telling us all about the amazing and truly inspiring work that she does for all the darling, little homeless kitties.

Brett (I think his name was Brett? Someone correct me if I’m wrong!) from Fry’s Food also took time out to chat to us about the importance of eating more veggies and less meat and we received some vouchers from them too! It’s so awesome because all of their items are certified by SANHA. YAY!

There were also 2 lovely ladies from Lenovo, who chatted to us about Lenovo’s new tablet, The Yoga 8. It’s flippen’ amazing, it’s  super skinny, lightweight and uber simple to use. And guess what?? They were also giving away TWO, yes TWO, Yoga 8 tablets! I know, totes cray, but unfortunately I wasn’t one of thee lucky winners! Perhaps next time 😦

The lovely and super sweet Karen from Philosophia Botanica was there too. She chatted to us about all of their amazing products and even brought some for us to try out.  Their products smell so invigorating but what I love the most is that none of their products contain parabens, artificial colors, mineral oil, silicone or any animal raw materials. Superb!

Local is Lekker: Rings & Things

The love of jewellery is common amongst all girls, mostly because we know that an outfit just simply isn’t complete without that totally amazing statement necklace or that super cute cocktail ring – and this is where Rings & Things fits into the equation!20140312-170446.jpg

Rings & Things is this super cool online store that I discovered whilst on my random Twitter searches for South African online shops. So these guys retail fashion and fine jewellery and have something for everyone! From vintage and quirky to edgy and bulky, they really do cover their bases!

I’m more of a vintage and quirky jewellery lover and I think that’s why I’m really fond of this site. Some of my favourite pieces from their online store are:

The moustache watch!

The infinity bracelet

The infinity bracelet

The arrow bangle

The arrow bangle

Considering my appreciation and love for their products, I took the time to learn a little bit more about Rings & Things, about the designers and just basically how Rings & Things was born. So here are some interesting facts:

  • The mastermind behind Rings & Things is Erika Fourie, the designer and manufacturer. Yup, she’s a woman, so like a total YAY for girl power!
  • Erika has a certificate in Art, as well as a B-Tech degree in Jewellery Design and Manufacture from the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at the Tshwane University of Technology. Yup, she’s amazing.
  • After spending a few months in the Big Apple, she returned to SA and worked part time as a fine jewellery lecturer at a private jewellery school, and then as a trend forecaster and fashion accessory buyer for a company who supply a chain of local fashion stores.
  • Due to her creativity, experience and love for fashion, she decided it was time to build her own brand and that’s how Rings & Things was born!
  • Her designs are inspired by everything and anything including blogs, magazines, her friends, architecture, movies or even from some stranger walking down the street.

That’s basically all there is to know about Rings & Things, so go ahead and check them out on their website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and on Pinterest.

If you like what to see, ordering is as easy as 1, 2, 3! Select your items, checkout and pay! And no stress, they guarantee secure payment methods, so your money is safe! And if you are in Europe, Australia or America Rings & Things offers International shipping too! How frikkin’ awesome is that?

My first trip to the amazing city of Cape Town

Cape Town is beautiful. Absolutely, positively, so frikken’ amazingly beautiful! I had the most amazing time in CT and will definitely going back soon!

As this was my first trip to The Mother City, I had to do all the touristy activities! I visited Table Mountain, Clifton Beach, The V&A Waterfront and Signal Hill, unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to visit Camps Bay or Hout Bay – but there’s always next time!

So instead of telling you all about my trip – I should just show you.

Let’s start with the view of CT from the plane:

Surviving Campus: How to prepare for your first day of University

Your first day at Uni can be very daunting – new surroundings, unfamiliar faces and the fear of the unknown – especially, if you are at one of the bigger universities such as Rhodes, UKZN, WITS or UCT.

I remember being nervous the night before my first day of Uni, I didn’t know what to expect. But when I got to my campus, I saw many familiar faces from my high school and tuition classes, so I naturally felt more at ease.

If, however, you are attending a University/College that is foreign to you and in which you are unlikely to bump into any friendly faces, here are few tips to help you prepare for your first day:

00

Download a map of your campus
You can usually find a map of your campus on the University’s website or if you received an orientation pack, it is probably somewhere in there. Go through the map the night before to familiarize yourself with the layout of the campus. Now, you don’t need to study it or memorize it – just snap a quick photo of the map and refer to it during your first days at campus.

dora

Don’t be afraid to ask for help with directions
Sometimes, the map of your campus is not a detailed map. It may only contain the names and directions to certain buildings on campus, but have no info pertaining to lecture room numbers etc. Once you find yourself in the correct building, just enquire from a staff member/security guard/friendly student about the room that you are looking for and they will surely help you out.

lecture

Never, ever sit in the back rows of a lecture theatre/room.
The worst thing one can ever do is sit at the back of a lecture theatre. It shows that you are nervous, lacking self-confidence and in some cases, it may even be perceived as disinterest. Now, I’m not saying that you should sit in the first row but gravitate towards the centre of the room, it is the perfect spot.

Eating_alone

Its’ okay to have lunch on your own – don’t starve yourself just because you have no one to eat with.
During my first weeks at campus, I was afraid to have lunch by my lonesome. I thought that people would judge me and assume I’m weird or have no friends just because I’m having lunch on my own. But after a few weeks, I realised that I’m not going to starve myself just because I’m afraid of what people might think of me. Whenever I was forced to have lunch on my own, I would find a grassy patch, an empty table in the cafeteria or a chilled bench and setup shop. I usually plug in my earphones (sometimes, I won’t even have any music playing), have a slice of my sandwich in my right hand and be playing temple run with my left hand.

textbooks2-e1348441874357

Do not be overwhelmed by the magnitude of course material or the thickness of your textbooks.
When I first the size of my textbooks, I died. No, really, I did. My Accounting 101 textbook was probably about 800 pages long, and I have never had a textbook longer than 100 pages. It scared the shit out of me. But over time, I realised that there only certain chapters we need to know and not the entire textbook. So chill out, you will be fine!

dwight-schrute-meme-generator-hard-false-not-if-you-have-jedi-powers-b0057f

Don’t allow lecturers to scare you with their ‘This course is difficult, you have to study every day to pass’ banter.
Lecturers make up shit. That is the truth. They take advantage of first year students – they know that first year’s will believe anything they say because they don’t know how campus works yet. Don’t fall prey to them.
Yes, it’s true that you have to work hard in order to pass – but no, you don’t have to study for like 4 hours every day. As long as you go for lectures, take down notes and understand the sections and concepts being lectured, then you are good to go. Just make sure you focus and can study when it comes to test and exams.

I hope these tips were of some benefit to you! I wish you all the best with your academic year and remember you can have fun and be a brilliant student, there are no rules against that. Good luck!

Year-End Charity Initiative for 2013

This year, my mom’s company decided to host their year-end function at the Edith Benson’s Babies Home in Sherwood. All of the money that would have usually been spend on extravagant décor and a fancy venue was instead used to throw a great party for these well deserving kids. Jumping Castles, ride-ons, balloons, santa hats, tasty snacks, great gifts, tinsel wigs, we had everything there for the kids!

The kids had a great time and so did we! We learnt so much about them, and we learnt just how lucky we all are that we have our parents and that we are loved and cared for by our families. The kids embraced us and they all fought for our attention. One of the kids came up to me and grabbed on to my leg and refused to let go, and when I picked him up and held him in my arms, he held on to me so tightly. And at that moment, the rest of the kids saw and they all surrounded me, so that they too can get some of the love. It was heart breaking.

I make it a duty of mines to visit a children’s home as often as I can, it really does bring you back down to Earth and makes you appreciate everything and everyone in your life.

Here are some of the images that I snapped whilst there last Friday:

3 chic and easy outfits for a perfect Summer’s day

Amazing picture that I took at North Beach in Durban. Beautiful.

Amazing picture that I took at North Beach in Durban. Beautiful.

In my family, we rarely ever plan anything, unless it’s a wedding – of course!  Every outing, picnic or trip to the beach is usually a spontaneous decision, made an hour before we leave home. That gives me only an hour to do my makeup and pick out an outfit and fab accessories and a hijab – it’s totes ridic, I know! But I love summer and spending time with my fam, therefore I created 3 go-to outfits that are chic, easy and hijab appropriate and that won’t leave me dressing up in the car, due to time constraints.

Look 1: Beach Chic

Dress: Mr Price; Necklace: Orelia, Forever New; Sandals: Woolworths; Chambray Shirt:; Woolworths; Stila Lippie: Truworths

Dress: Mr Price; Necklace: Orelia, Forever New; Sandals: Woolworths; Chambray Shirt:; Woolworths; Stila Lippie: Truworths

I love maxi dresses. These dresses transition great from day to night, with a simple swop of accessories which make them a great investment. This look is perfect for a day at beach, chilling in the sand and maybe even going for a little leg-dip in the water.

Throwing a denim shirt over a maxi dress is brilliant, especially if you burn quite easily in the sun. Due to it being a day at the beach, I like to keep accessories to a minimum – we don’t want to blind anyone with our bling, now do we?

Look 2: Picnicking at the Park

Top: Mr Price; Skinnies: Mr Price; Cross Body Bag: Woolworths; Sandal: Legit

Top: Mr Price; Skinnies: Mr Price; Cross Body Bag: Woolworths; Sandal: Legit

I love the park, playing on the swings, engaging in an informal game of cricket/soccer and enjoying a yummy hotdog whilst chilling on a camping chair – yup, that’s how we do it.

During picnics, because of all the activities you are involved in, you want to make sure that you are fully covered and that all chances of flashing someone, is eliminated .That’s why a pair of skinnies is perfect. Choose one that’s pretty and has a bit of whimsy to it, like this one, with all the polka dots – so cute!  Pair your bottoms with a plain, white top whilst adding some colour to your look with a nifty bag and cute shoes.

Look 3: Crop-top heaven

Top: Mr Price; Skirt: Mr price; Sandal: Mr Price; Chain: Woolworths; Bracelets: Mr price

Top: Mr Price; Skirt: Mr price; Sandal: Mr Price; Chain: Woolworths; Bracelets: Mr price

This outfit is great for any type of activity, be it shopping, beaching or even a visit to your nearest Wakaberry.

Crop tops seems to be all the rage recently, you can wear it by pairing it with a high-waisted maxi skirt and a gold statement necklace– you are still showing off the crop top but without showing any skin, total hijabness! Add on a bunch of gold-toned bracelets and cute sandals to take the look to the next level.

Hope you are having a great summer!
