My Skin Journey with Dermaceutic and Dr Ridhwana Vawda

If you’ve been following my blog since its inception in 2013, then you are definitely aware of the battle that I’ve been fighting in regard to my skin.
My skin is very much prone to breakouts and is so reactive that most products do not agree to it. During Ramadaan (June/July), my skin took a turn for the worse and I broke out on my forehead, cheeks, jawline and even on my chin – it was just total insanity.

I finally decided that it was time for a change and as fate may have it, I made that decision just a few days before I attended Dr Ridhwana Vawda + Dermaceutic’s Promo Day.

My Top 5 Makeup Removing Methods

I love dressing up, going out and having fun but I absolutely dread coming home and having to remove my stubborn eyeliner and mascara – and I’m sure just like me, you feel exactly the same way.

So when it comes to removing makeup, I always choose the method that would remove every smidgen of eyeliner and mascara without much effort and which is also safe and doesn’t require a cleanser afterwards – which would be a cleansing balm but I’ll tell you more about that just now.

Essence Haul {Eyeshadows, Glitter Eyeliner, Mascara & Glitter Lashes}

Essence is one of those brands that offer quality products at an affordable price. Whilst I do prefer purchasing the bulk of my products from higher-end brands, I always look to Essence when I’m in need of a specific eyeshadow or lip pencil to create a look for a special event – because I most likely wouldn’t use these products on a daily basis and I don’t need to feel bad because it was cheap anyway!

Catrice Ultimate Colour and Ultimate Lip Glow Review

I have never pegged myself as a lipstick kinda girl as I’ve only ever worn balms or lip chubbies – and also never owned a tube of lippie until recently.

A few weeks ago, I found myself browsing through Kalahari’s website and somehow convinced myself to purchase not one, but two lipsticks. The first being Catrice’s Ultimate Lip Colour in Matte About Pink (250) and the other Catrice’s Ultimate Lip Glow.

Love surprises? Why not surprise yourself with Rubybox

About a week or two ago, I received a wonderful little surprise from the lovelies over at Rubybox. I was quite excited to just dive into this little pinkish red box to discover if this would be a surprise that I would love, since I’m not a total fan of surprises . Well, I’m glad to report that I loved this surprise, well, loved almost all of it.
So, included in this little box of beauty surprises was a Rubybox branded nail polish and smooch stick, a Swedish eggwhite facial care soap and a Natural Lab tinted face cream – all of which you can see below.

jan 459

Rubybox Smooch Stick in Red My Mind
I decided to begin the review with my fav of them all. I honestly love this smooch stick. It glides on perfectly, is well pigmented and is long lasting too. It’s the perfect red and I’m pretty sure it will suit almost any skin tone.jan 197

I find that a little goes a long way, so I apply very little to the middle of both my upper and lower lip, press my lips together and rub from side to side. And in about 15seconds my lips are all dressed up in this wonderful creamy, scarlet red pigment. If you’re interested in purchasing this smooch stick, you can find it here. jan 248

Natural Lab Tinted Natural Face Cream
I haven’t actually heard of this brand before, with that said I think it’s a great brand judging from this face cream. It has an SPF of 30 which makes your life so much easier, has a bit of a tint/colour which will help to even out your skin tone and provides a slight summer glow to the face.jan 201

It does say that it is suitable for sensitive skin, however I am not brave enough to try it out on my face so I can’t say whether that is true or not. Also, if you apply too much of this product you may end up looking sweaty/oily, so it’s best to begin with a little bit of product and then build on from there. If you’re interested in purchasing this tinted face cream/sunblock you can find it here.

Rubybox Beauty Nailed It! Lacquer in Pretty Minted
To be honest, I don’t use nail polish so this particular surprise wasn’t amongst the ones that I loved. I did, however, try it out for review purposes, and unfortunately I wasn’t a fan. I’m not sure if I was applying it correctly or not, but I felt like I needed at least 3 coats of the nail polish to achieve an opaque look. And after applying the 3 coats, it felt extremely thick and gloopy on my nails and just wasn’t cute at all.jan 200

I was quite shocked that I didn’t like this nail lacquer, because I’ve tried the By the Seaside shade (I received it at the Durban Blogger Meet in 2014) and that one was really wonderful. The shimmer was much more apparent than the shimmer in this one and 1 coat was enough to completely cover my nail. Maybe someone else would have a different opinion on Pretty Minted than me, but that’s how I feel about it. The colour is really pretty though so I just wish it was more effective. You can find it here.

Lanolin Agg-Tval Swedish Facial Soap
Made from egg whites, rosewater and lanolin, this soap is amazingly moisturizing and conditioning. Due to my acne-prone skin, I haven’t tried it out on my face but it has done wonders for my hands. It cleanses the skin to a point where it feels squeaky clean but not dry -so it is truly a pleasure to use.

Most who have used it (those with oily, sensitive and acne-prone skin) have all had only good things to say, some even claimed that it helped calm down active acne which would make sense as rose water has soothing properties. If you’d like to get your hands (muhahahaha, mind the pun) on this little wonder of a soap, you can find it here.

The above box and its contents was the January Surprise Box which varied from person to person – which is the aim of the Surprise Box. It provides you with luxury and trial sized beauty products that are customized to your beauty profile and will include a variety of makeup, hair care and fragrances.

If you’d like to receive a Surprise Box from Rubybox every month, you can sign up here. Usually, it would cost you R169 a month but if you use the coupon 2015SURPRISE you will pay just R119 for your very first Surprise Box. If you’ve got the cash to spare, it is a really great way to introduce yourself to new brands and products and to perhaps discover a newbie that you love!

Gettin’ lippy with it

It wasn’t too long ago when the Strawberry scented Labello was the only lip product I owned. But recently, I’ve been more and more obsessed with lip products, so I thought I’d share 3 of my favorites with you.

Blistex Simple and Sensitive Lip Balm
I recently had somewhat of an allergic reaction to the ingredients in both the Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Lip Plumping Gloss and one of the Smashbox lip glosses – in general, my lips don’t play well with glosses. Anyway, I tried everything from Maybelline’s BabyLips to Vaseline even Zambuk and plain ol’ olive oil to try and get my lips back to normal but nothing worked. My lips were extremely dry and itchy and the upper one had turned a dark brown -which I’m assuming is an indication that the gloss burnt my lips – and was just horrible and annoying to look at.
Finally, I came across this beauty from Blistex and I kid you not, the next morning my lips were back to their usual self – plumpy and hydrated and no longer brown! IMG_1194
Initially, I was a bit hesitant to pay 40bucks for a balm that looked like it travelled all the way from the 90’s due to it’s rather crappy and lame packaging, however I’m glad that I did purchase it!
Apart from it’s aforementioned lack in visual appeal, it works superbly and always, ALWAYS, makes my lips feel great! I use it every night before bed and throughout the day. I also use it as a lip base for every lip product that I use. I find that since the Blistex balm is quite moisturizing, when used with another lip product, it gives my lips a very hydrated and healthy look and stops coloured lip products from drying out my lips and settling within my lip lines.
This is one product that I don’t think I can live without. And yeah, I’m even willing to pay another 40bucks for it if it means that my lips won’t have another incident!

Revlon’s ColourBurst Matte Balm in Unapologetic
I love chubby crayon-like lip products. I find it much easier to slick on than a lipstick and I find that they are quite pigmented too.
This particular one, is very hydrating, brightly coloured, smells minty and long-lasting too.

IMG_1186 I wouldn’t willingly purchase such a bright colour, however I received this at one of the Cosmo 2014 events and have loved it ever since. This is my go-to lip colour if I’m planning to have some fun in the sun or a quick trip to the local mall. I usually apply my Blistex Simple and Sensitive Balm as a lip base and then follow up with this chubby and blend into my lips. This particular shade will work well on fair, medium, olive and darker skin tones, so it’s a definite must-have.IMG_1198-1

Catrice’s Long Lasting Lip Pencil in Red Lip District 050
So, this is the first lip pencil that I’ve ever purchased/used. I’m not sure why, but I’ve never been interested in lip pencils. Perhaps, I thought that it was only for lining lips and wasn’t willing to invest that much of time in my lips where I’d have to line them and fill them in too.IMG_1191
Anyway, this one was quite an impulse buy. I think I paid about R13 for this one during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales on Kalahari  (you can find the lip liner here and even get it for free with the current promotion on Kalahari) and was excited to see what it was like. I wasn’t expecting much and thought it’d be average but it actually surprised me. It is quite bright and red and much, much more moisturizing than I thought a lip liner would be ( I compared this to an Essence one that I bought at the same time, and the Essence one really dried out my lips). IMG_1204-1

I’m not a fan of red lips, so I blended this one into my Blistex coated lips and created a subtle watermelon-red shade which I love. I usually wear the lip liner + Blistex duo when shopping or on a night out in which I amp up the pigment from watermelon red to water ice-cream red. The normal selling price is about R30 and is such a steal! I’m sure it isn’t as wonderful as a MAC or a Bobbi Brown liner but really does produce amazing results at a fraction of the cost and is perfect for those beauties on a budget!

Let’s hope that this year, my love for and collection of lip products grows extensively!

{Oh My} GOSH Freebies

I love GOSH cosmetics! I’m not sure whether I first discovered them in-store or on an episode of TLC’S Ultimate Shopper but nonetheless I’m glad that I did. Their products are frikken crazy good.

If this is the first time that you are hearing/reading about GOSH Cosmetics, let me fill you in. GOSH is a Danish brand that covers everything from makeup, skincare and even hair care and fragrances. Their products aren’t as expensive as MAC or Smashbox but they also aren’t as cheap as Essence or Catrice Cosmetics. So if you are willing to shell out between R60 and R150 per product then GOSH is definitely for you.

So over the weekend, I popped into Edgars Pavillion and decided to head on over to the GOSH counter/half-aisle. I picked up a few GOSH goodies (review coming soon!) and lucky for me, my purchase total was greater than R399 so I qualified for the GWP (aka gift with purchase).
The GWP included a GOSH-branded, nifty black knapsack /backpack, a lip lacquer, an eyeshadow chubby, a mascara and a little sachet sample of a GOSH day cream. Here’s a preview:

The bag is quite cool and I most probably will be using it to the beach/cycling this summer – it looks quite chic when paired with a denim shirt or a pair of joggers. The Good Morning cream isn’t something that I will try on my skin I have sensitive/acne-prone skin so I’m not willing to risk it, but the other 3 full-sized products are definitely worth reviewing on my blog. Leggo!

Forever Eye Shadow in Grey
This particular eye shadow is in the form of a chubby and has a creamy consistency. I love that it effortlessly glides on to the eyes and the colour payoff is phenomenal. It is very glittery so you may want to save it for a night out instead of a day at the park. I enjoyed the look that this eye shadow achieved, however it wasn’t easy to blend in to the skin, whenever I would try to a ton of the product would end up smudged on my finger and removed from my eyelid. Other than that, it’s a great product and I’m glad that it was included in the GWP.november 015

Boombastic XXL Volume Mascara
When it comes to mascara, I definitely have my favourites. I adore Smashbox’s Full Exposure Mascara and Revlon’s Bold Lacquer Mascara – they are both easy to apply and offer longer, fuller and clump-free lashes. I never had any high hopes for this mascara, especially after noting that the applicator was of the spikey, silicone comb variant and not a brush. But, I guess I was wrong to judge a tube of mascara by its applicator. After just one coat my lashes were left looking much fuller and a tad longer and there was hardly any clump action going on. And even though the mascara dries quite quickly, it doesn’t make my lashes feel hard and crusty – which is splendid! I really do wonder if GOSH knows that they are giving away such awesomeness in their GWP??november 014

Lip Lacquer in Hot Lips
Aah, I saved the best for last. The lip lacquer, just like the mascara, was another product that I thought I would hate. I’m not really a lipgloss girl – I prefer lipsticks, balms and crèmes – and I thought that this particular one would be one of those bright, sticky, highly glossy lip products but once again I was wrong. The lip lacquer is rather glossy when it’s first applied but once blended in with your fingers, it is absorbed into the lips and transforms into some sort of balm/lipstick. The colour isn’t so reddish corally when one coat is applied to my lips, it’s more of a natural and subtle pinkish red (which you can see in the image below). The staying power on this lip lacquer isn’t that great, so you may need to reapply after every hour or two.

What I do love is that it is extremely moisturising and perfect for those of you with chapped or dry lips. It even soothed and totally vanquished a reaction that I had to a lip balm, which darkened my lips and even peeled my skin off –yup, it was painful and if you look close enough, you probably can see the little bit of damage that’s still left behind. The best part of the lip lacquer for me, is its scent – it smells like watermelon bubblegum and you literally will not be able to stop yourself from continuously sniffing it – it is so addictive! BTW, I apply one coat before I go to bed and I wake up with perfectly soft and pink lips!november 016

GOSH’s GWP offer ends this Sunday and is exclusive to Edgars, so you may want to get down there. Honestly, this is one of thee best freebie combos that I’ve ever come across, the full-sized products are frikken amazing and the bag is actually usable. I might just do some more shopping with GOSH, just to get another of the GWP – yeah I’m in love!

Here’s to the freebies that make you go OhMyGosh,

P.S I hope you don’t mind the awkwardness of my lip/eye shots!
