Rubybox Sale Haul

In January, Rubybox had an awesome sale on a ton of their beauty goodies – most items were fairly marked down whilst others were as cheap as chips. I knew what I needed/wanted, so I gathered my must-haves into my basket and checked out. I picked up 3 gel eyeliners, an eyelash curler and a makeup brush cleanser. And here’s what I thought of all the items I purchased.

The Gel Eyeliners
Yardley’s Expert Eyes Gel Eyeliner in Copper Gleam and Forest Fantasy and Smashbox’s Jet Set Eyeliner in Dark Brown ( I really wanted the black, but it wasn’t available!), all made their way into my virtual basket.
jan 225 jan 226 jan 237

Even though I’m a huge Smashbox fan, I’d have to say that the Yardley gel eyeliners are just as good as the Smashbox one. Besides being packaged the same way and both being accompanied by a nifty brush that makes application easy, the gel eyeliners from both brands have an insane staying power, are highly pigmented and dries on the lids in less than a minute. jan 252

This was my very first time purchasing/using a gel eyeliner – I’m more of an eye pencil and liquid liner girl – but I enjoyed using them and will definitely be purchasing more. The Copper gel eyeliner from Yardley is still on sale on Rubybox for just R29,95 each, find it here. And if you’re wondering, I paid just R89.95 for the Smashbox one, which usually retails for R239.95 😌

The Eyelash Curler
I’ve been searching for an affordable and trustworthy eyelash curler for months now – and I finally got my paws on the Rubybox Beauty Eyelash Curler. jan 214

To be honest, I think that an eyelash curler is one of the most important beauty tools – every girl needs to own one. This particular one from Rubybox checks all the boxes for me – curls my lashes without a fuss, is painless and doesn’t tug on my lashes and has two replacement rubber parts!

It will most likely last you for about 3 years, if not longer, so paying R79,95 should be a breeze – it’s an investment in your lashes, after all! You can find the curler here!

The Makeup Brush Cleanser
It can be a fuss to clean/wash your brushes everyday especially if you may need to use the same brush over 3 or 4 consecutive days and you don’t have a spare – so this is where the Fresh in a Flash Brush Cleanser from Rubybox beauty fits in.
jan 240

All you’ve got to do is spray some of this magic cleansing liquid onto your brush, wait 5 seconds and then wipe your brush back and forth on to a paper towel to get rid of makeup and the liquid and voila! your brushes are clean! For those of you who use your angled liner brush to apply liquid liner will appreciate this as you know your brush gets hard and stiff once the product has dried on it – but in about 30 seconds after applying the FIAF Brush Cleanser your brush will be as good as new!

This brush cleanser is more of a temporary quick fix, so your brushes still need to be properly washed regularly to keep them clean, fresh and as good as new. It’s basically the dry shampoo for your brushes! I’ll be sharing my makeup brush cleansing method with you guys soon, so look out for that.
This brush cleanser is definitely my favorite from all the items purchased, so if you’re interested in buying some of this magic potion for your brushes, you can find it here for just R69,95

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream Review

I have an inexplicable love for Smashbox products, I don’t know how or when it started, but I just do! And this BB cream has just took the intensity of my love to a whole other level!

20140402-184124.jpg

So what is it and how does it work?
Well like most BB creams, it’s formulated to perfect, prime, protect, hydrate and control oil. It’s basically a tinted moisturizer with the added extra of antioxidants and hyaluronic acid which aids in the skin’s regenerative processes. This beaut even promises to reduce wrinkles and fine lines in just 4 weeks and it has an SPF of 35.Say whaaaaaat??

20140402-190545.jpg

20140402-192854.jpg

That’s all cool, but does it deliver what it promises?
Yes, yes, yes and a thousand yes’s more! It is frikkin’ amazing. The first day I wore it to campus, I received many compliments from my friends and classmates. Everyone commented on how brilliantly my skin was clearing up. Now, keep in mind, that I have acne scars on my cheeks so when I applied the BB cream, it covered it up but in a natural way – it looked as if the scars got lighter and as if I wasn’t wearing anything on my skin.

So basically, it offers sheer coverage with a natural finish. Some say it offers a matte finish and others, a more dewy finish, but I honestly believe that it all depends on what you wear under the BB cream. I apply both my facial oil and sunblock before applying the BB cream so I guess this is what results in the natural finish on my skin.

Above is a little bit of the BB cream in Light/Medium and below is what it looks like once blended, it’s almost undetectable but the effects are so evident. Love it!

20140402-192538.jpg

And is it suitable for acne prone or sensitive skin?
See, hmm, I’m not too sure if it is. As you know, I have extremely sensitive skin that is wildly acne prone and I have been using this product since Feb. However, the product that I was using since Feb, was my sisters and on Saturday I bought my own. So, up until Saturday I never had any issues, no breakouts, no itchiness or redness, basically no side effects. But ever since Saturday, I’ve got two pimples and my skin is super itchy. So yeah.
If you do have acne-prone skin, you might want to stay away from this product!

Hmm, okay so do you think it’s worth it then?
Definitely! There’s no question about it. It’s a great multi-use product with so many benefits and is perfect if you are an on-the-go type of girl. It’s simple, easy and natural and I love it! And for only R390, it’s a must have!

Here’s to pretty skin ❤️

Can’t wait for Catrice Cosmetics new Limited Edition ‘It Pieces’ to hit SA stores!!

The new Limited Edition ‘It Pieces’  from Catrice Cosmetics is set to hit South African stores in mid Jan next year, and I cannot wait for it to arrive! This particular limited edition will make a great addition to my makeup collection! The colours and shades that make up It Pieces are perfect for Spring/Summer and will add a great pop of colour to your outfit!

Such pretty colours <3

Such pretty colours ❤

Included in this LE is a single  eye shadow quattro, crushed crystal nail polishes in 3 colours, a defining blush and 2 lip colours – all of which look like they going to be amazing! However, I’m most excited about Sun Glow Shimmering Bronzing Powder and the Made To Stay Smoothing Lip Polish which is available in 3 shades.

The bronzing powder has a cool 3D embossed zig zag pattern which is supposed to allow for the 2 shades within the compact to blend well with each other and gives the skin a radiant summer glow. Most bronzers I’ve tried are very dark and make me look as if I’ve got dark patches everywhere, so I’m holding thumbs for this one!

Baked beauty!

Baked beauty!

The lip polishes have the colour of a lipstick, shine of a gloss and durability of a balm, 3 products in 1, now that’s what I’m talking about! I usually use my mood lipstick from Dischem as a base, follow up with Labello’s Fruity Shine and top off with my Smashbox lipgloss, so this product gets me really excited.  I’m hoping that the colour does last for the 8 hours that is promised on the packaging, and that the gloss lasts throughout the day. We can only hope for the best!

3 pretty colours!

3 pretty colours!

Plus, I know that even though im a budget I will defo be able to afford this LE, because all of Catrice Cosmetics’ products are very, very reasonably priced – not as cheap as Essence, but still very affordable!

Can’t wait for mid Jan!

Tutorial: How to achieve the ‘No-Makeup’ Makeup Look in just 4 steps!

Calvin Klein once said: ‘The best thing is to look natural – but it takes makeup to look natural’. And that is so true. I love wearing makeup and creating different looks, but sometimes I just want to look natural, I just want to forget the dark, smoky eyes or bold lips for the day.

So I came up with a great makeup routine, basically my everyday routine for campus, that enhances my natural beauty and which is super easy to achieve. Follow the steps below..

Step 1: BB Cream

I like to use a BB cream rather than a foundation, mostly because foundations are much heavier and more likely to cake up rather than BB creams. Using a BB cream is going to provide light/medium coverage making it a great base for a ’natural’ makeup look.

I particularly like Smashbox’s Camera Ready BB Cream, as it has a SPF of 35 and works very, very well with acne prone skin. But if you are working on budget, Garnier’s  Miracle Skin Perfector BB cream is a great alternative, it has an SPF of 15 and is  also appropriate for acne prone skin.

Step 2: Blush

Blush is great at brightening up the face and giving you that ‘just pinched’ look, but don’t go too crazy on the blush. Try to get the least amount of product on to your cheeks by dusting your brush off before apply, or swiping it at the back off your hand.

I have an olive skin tone, therefore I tend to gravitate towards blushes in pink hues – but if you are fair/dark skinned peachy hues will look great on you! My favourite blushes are Smashbox Blush Rush in Peony (I love Smashbox, meep!) and Essence’s Silky Touch Blush in Adorable.

Step 3: Lip balm

I like using a balm rather than a gloss or a stickie, as balms provide lips with a light pigment but a subtle gloss, which is more natural. Most people would use a sheer lipgloss/colourless balm, but I’ve found that because of my skin tone, I have to have some colour as neutral lips tend to really wash me out and make me look dull and boring.

I absolutely adore Labello’s Fruity Shine! I probably go through at least 9 of these beauts each year. They are a staple in my campus bag and if you see me in lecs, I’m almost always reapplying. I just can’t get enough. It’s so great because it has an SPF of 15 and it smoothes and conditions the lips whilst providing a slight shimmery pink tint to the lips.

My li[s surely do love Labello!

My li[s surely do love Labello!

Step 4: Mascara

I love, love, looove mascara! Mascara is like coffee- for my eyes- it provides an instant pick-me-up, it widens and awakens the eyes and just makes me want to give butterfly kisses to everyone!

I love use Elizabeth Arden’s Ceramide Lash Extending Treatment Mascara, as it doesn’t clump or dry out your lashes. Like half way through the day, if I had to touch my lashes it will be super soft , as if I had no mascara on, and nor would it flake. It also conditions the lashes whilst you wear it, so when you wash it out you would notice that your lashes feel so much softer and silkier. A+.

Here's to longer, fuller and healthier lashes!

Optional Step: Eyeliner

I’ve mentioned in previous posts that I don’t ever leave the house without eyeliner, and it’s true! I know it’s not very natural to have a swipe of dark eyeliner on your lower lash line but if I don’t, I just look sleepy and sick, not cool!

On most days, I use Catrice Cosmetic’ Smokey Eye Pencil in 01-Black Earl but sometimes I use Essence’s Stays No Matter What waterproof eye pencil in 02-Stunning Brown, to tone it down a little. I’ve found that both Essence and Catrice Cosmetics eyeliners have great staying power and last throughout the day, unlike Smashbox eyeliners which rub off and disappear after a few hours. Definitely getting more for less, with Catrice and Essence.

My first love!

My first love!

So that’s it! My ‘natural’ makeup look! Hope you enjoyed the post.

4 of South Africa’s best online shopping sites!

I discovered the joys of online shopping in March of this year, and I have been obsessed ever since. The fact that you can do an insane amount of shopping whilst sitting on your couch, with the added bonus of not having to deal with long queues, really appealed to me.
I have tried out many online shopping sites, since March, but there are 4 sites, in particular, that have stood out as a result of the great customer service and product quality they each offer. And here they are, in no particular order:

1)Runway Sale:

Runway Sale offers designer brands at a discounted price but for a limited time only. Sales are only open to members and usually only a limited quantity of items are available, so you got to be quick. Some of their previous sales/events include Guess Jewellery and Watches, Triumph, Bronx Women, Playtex, Banana Moon and many others. In order to know when a sale is going down, become a member and receive email notifications or like them on twitter and Facebook and lookout for updates.

Delivery Fee: R45

2)Faithful to Nature:

Faithful to nature sells natural and organic products ranging from great skin care to healthy food and even some great home ware items. Each product is checked to verify that it is indeed green, earth-friendly and safe for us to use. They also have this cool policy that ensures that a free sample is included with every order that you make – with my last purchase I scored a 50ml bottle of naturalmente shampoo- totes amaze!

Delivery Fee: R35 and free delivery for orders over R250.

3)Style36:

Style 36 is a retailer of both men’s and women’sfashion, as well as beauty. They have a great mix of both local and international brands and designers, as well as items in different price ranges catering to those of us on a budget (such as sad, sad university students like myself). I recently purchased from Style36 – Cyber Monday feeeeeveeeeer- and was pleased to note that they request a copy of your ID and the front of your credit card to verify that it is really you making the purchase!

Delivery Fee: Free! Free! Free! Every day, all day!

4)RubyBox:

RubyBox has both a beauty boutique and what they call a “try-before-you-buy” beauty subscription of R119 a month. Their beauty boutique is stocked with great products from great brands, such as Stila, Smashbox, Yves Rocher, Soap & Glory and even Urban Decay, oh yeeah. They are even offering free delivery until 31 December 2013, now that is something to cheer about!

Delivery fee: R50 and free on all orders over R300.

If you haven’t checked out these sites yet, I suggest you do! Customer satisfaction is their aim and it is highly evident from the high level of customer service and astounding product quality that they are all achieving it.

Happy online shopping!

The perfect solution for makeup storage

For months, I’ve been nagging my mom to get me one of those Kardashian Make-up Organizers, you know,  those acrylic ones that look so amazing and give you a 360 view of all your make up?

Well, eeeek! She got me one! And so naturally, I’ve already stocked it up with all my make up items, but somehow feel that I need more make up to fill up all the empty spaces.

Here it is:

4 tiers of awesomeness..

4 tiers of awesomeness..

So it looks kind off small in the image above, but trust me its not. It is 300mmx300mmx300mm, it is 4 tiers high with 3 drawers and flip top tier – for perfumes and whatever. And I removed those dividers from the drawers, it just was not working for me. What a great organizer! I love it okaaaay. Simply love it.

And have you seen the handles?? It’s these gorgeous little, acrylic crystal handles and they go perfectly with my room.

I can not stop fiddling with these handles! Love it!

My mom bought it for either R999 or R1099 (I wasn’t really paying attention, I was just too excited!!) from one of the lady’s she knows at work. Thank God for mothers! And I love you mom!

Here’s a few more images of my new, favourite thing:

Monday Morning Madness: My 3 minute beauty fix

Every Monday, no matter how early I set my alarm, I am late for campus. On a typical Monday morning, I usually rush out of the house with a slice of toast in my mouth and a cup of tea in my left hand, whilst attempting to lock my front door and gate, and trying desperately not to drop anything. Yup, my Monday mornings suck.
I realized what takes up the most time in the morning, is figuring out what to wear and applying my beauty products . Now, I can’t really  not wear clothes or go bare-faced to campus – so, I had to find a way to ensure that these daunting but totally essential tasks don’t take up so much of time.
I decided that my OOTD will be contemplated whilst I’m in the shower – head scarf, top, bottoms and shoes.  One task down, oh yeeeeah!
As soon as I get out the shower, I begin my 3 minute beauty fix. 7 items in 3 minutes – yes, it’s totally possible!
I chose the 7 items that will make the most  impact. Plus, I am going to campus so I don’t want to look OTT or like I just painted my face on, therefore sticking to just 7 items was a good plan.
Each item takes no longer than 30 seconds to apply, I kid you not, and here they are:

1) Dermalogica Active Moist (30 seconds)

You can’t start a day without moisturizer. You simply can not. No question about it. It’s a sin and a crime and totally frowned upon! Apply moisturizer every day. Every frikken day. More than once too, if needed.

I usually use different moisturizers depending on the weather. And since it is almost summer, Active Moist works quite well. It’s keeps my skin moisturized all day and I don’t experience any breakouts, which is awesome!
meep 039
I apply an almond-sized ( because pea-sized is just unrealistic!) amount of Active moist to my neck and face.
2) Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara (30 seconds)
I love this mascara. It lengthens my lashes and creates volume without clumping or making my lashes dry and flaky.
meep 028
I apply 3 coats – without allowing the prior coat to dry before applying the next – because I simply don’t have the time to let them dry first.
3) Stila Eyeshadow in Kitten (30 seconds)
This eyeshadow is heavenly! It has great staying power and achieves the same look regardless if it applied with a brush or your finger.
meep 038
I apply a dot this eyeshadow, to the inner corners of my eyes, using my pinky. This helps to awaken the eye, and makes you appear fresh and well rested.
4) Catrice Smokey Eye Pencil (30 seconds)
I can not live without this eye pencil. I never leave home without eyeliner, therefore I never leave home without this beaut!
I just glide this baby onto my lower waterline and smile because I know I will never hear anyone tell me that I look sick or tired. Woohoo!
5)  Smashbox Blush Rush in Peony (30 seconds)
This is one of the best blushes I’ve come across in a long, long time  – it is not too pigmented but neither is it too light. It is the perfect shade.
meep 032meep 034
I lightly dab my blush brush onto the compact and easily sweep it across my cheeks. Perfectly rosy cheeks in seconds 🙂
6) Lancôme Lipstick in Rouge (15 seconds)
This is a red lipstick. Yes, it is. But take a look at my swatches below. Both swatches are of the same lipstick in the same shade, but the one on the right is achieved by applying a minimal amount and then  blending it in. It still maintains some of it’s color without being overbearing, which is perfect for that just-bitten look.
meep 037
meep 035
7) Softlips Pure Papaya Organic Lip conditioner (15 seconds)
I’ve been using Softlips ever since I can remember. It’s great because it’s super slim and can easily slip into your pocket and it makes your lips feel super duper amazing.
meep 036
This particular one, has a yummy Papaya scent, sometimes I just want to eat up my lips, relax..I’m kidding!..Nope actually, I’m not.
After applying my Lancôme Lipstick, I apply two coats of my tasty Papaya Softlips, pop in to my pocket/ bag and then apply it throughout the day. Smooth, healthy lips all day long 🙂
